Sweden and Visions of Norway: Politics and Culture, 1814-1905

H.Arnold Barton, Carbondale, Ill.: Southern Illinois University Press, 2003 (xiv + 227 s., illustr.)

H. Arnold Barton, professor emeritus of history, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, USA.

The Swedish-Norwegian dynastic union has traditionally been seen as a failed experiment and a large literature on both sides has concentrated on the various conflicts that led to its collapse. This study seeks instead to show its actual impact upon contemporary internal developments, most specifically in Sweden, where Norway brought powerful influences to bear in the closely interwoven areas of political and cultural ideals.
